Flaming Lips Give In to Bootleggers, Release Live DVD

Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne admits that a live DVD is not something the Oklahoma City band ever previously considered. "I never really watched them myself," he tells Spinner. But they've since had a change of heart, as he explains. "In recent years there's so much stuff, especially on You Tube, that you almost feel like if you don't make one yourself they get made for you. And that's what a novice to the Flaming Lips might look at and say, 'Oh, I see their show here.'"
So, utilizing the talents of their friends, specifically Bradley Beesley, who did the 'Fearless Freaks' movie about the group, the Lips recorded two shows last year for release. "The one that's coming out in July is the Oklahoma City show, where we unveiled our giant UFO-like show," Coyne says. "So just by incorporating that into the fact that we played at the amphitheater that is part of the Oklahoma Zoo, we end up with this great title -- 'UFOs at the Zoo.'"

Like most DVDs these days, it will feature more than just the live element. "We come down in a giant spaceship and we get out and it shows the crowd -- a good quarter of the crowd is in some bizarre costume," Coyne elaborates. "And Bradley has little vignettes that sort of veer away from just the concert. He talks to fans and you see us putting together the giant UFO and all these sorts of things. It's quite colorful." The second show, recorded in HD at the Hollywood Bowl, will possibly make its debut on an HD network this summer, prior to its DVD release, according to Coyne.

Art Brut

Art Brut is an indie rock band from London, fronted by the hyperactive Eddie Argos. Formed in 2003, their sound is punky and sharp; their songs catchy and often funny. They have a reputation as a great live act. Named after a post-WWI French art movement, the monicker translates as "Rough" or "Raw Art."

So far Art Brut has released one album, Bang Bang Rock and Roll, featuring the singles "Emily Kane", "Good Weekend" and "Formed a Band".

Currently, they are on tour supporting Maximo Park on their UK/Europe tour.

Over and Over - Hot Chip

Hot Chip

The brains behind electronic band Hot Chip are Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard. The combination of Taylor's ethereal high pitch vocals and Goddard's warm low pitch and the band's blip-blop electronics creates a dreamy sound, and along with the somewhat ironic lyrics it makes this band one of a kind.

Some of their influences include Phil Spector and The Beach Boys, Kraftwerk and Robert Wyatt, Timbaland and Madlib, Brian Eno and Devo, Antipop Consortium and Aphex Twin, Will Oldham and Royal Trux.

Hot Chip are Alexis Taylor, Joe Goddard, Al Doyle, Owen Clarke and Felix Martin. Doyle has been offering support (guitar) to LCD Soundsystem on their latest tour, and Taylor has recently been seen gigging with Green Gartside of Scritti Politti. Rumours are now rife that the two are working together on a collaborative album.

The White Stripes Reveal Icky Thump Album Cover

Today the White Stripes revealed the album art for their new record, Icky Thump. It keeps the custom of red, white, and black covers of the past. They also have given us the release date for the new LP.


Icky Thump will be released in the US June, 19 on Warner Brothers.

The Hold Steady - Live At Fingerprints

The new album from the Hold Steady is a live acoustic set at the Long Beach store, Fingerprints. The mini CD contains a more stripped down sound and reveals a little more about the band. The band is lively and charismatic, which makes for an enjoyable listen. It is a limited release and will only be released to independent retailers once. As the press release says, "when it's gone, it's gone." So get it soon!

Bright Eyes - Cassadaga

Cassadaga, Bright Eyes new album, has a more country folk sound to it than any of its predecessors, and contains, for a lack of a better word, many grand arrangements. The slicker production helps contribute to this sound. However, Bright Eyes signature sound is still there, and Oberst's strained vocals still remain. Overall, this is a worthy follow up to I'm Wide Awake It's Morning.

Klaxons - Myths of the Near Future

The Klaxons debut LP, Myths of the Near Future, does not deliver a very "rave-y" sound as their early singles suggested, but rather multi-layered R&B styled vocals behind electronic beats. Think of it as a Justin Timberlake album on meth. If you want a high energy, danceable pop album, then Myths of the Near Future is for you.

Kaiser Chiefs - Yours Truly, Angry Mob

The Kaiser Chiefs sophomore effort, Yours Truly, Angry Mob, is amore heavier and bigger album than the last, and borrows more generously from their britpop influences. The record is like the last in that it has a few bright spots (which are very good), but also may have too many filler songs.

Silversun Pickups

The Silversun Pickups are an indie rock band from Los Angeles, California that are secretly leading the inevitable 90s revival. They have released an EP, Pikul, and a full length album, Carnavas. They have toured with the Aussie rockers Wolfmother and are currently on the road with Snow Patrol. The band members are friends who had played together previously or in mutual friends' bands. Their sound is often compared to the Smashing Pumpkins (nothing wrong with that). They have a self described, "blanket-y" sound that recalls many great bands of the nineties. Overall, listening to the Pickups is a very satisfying experience.

Cold War Kids

The Cold War kids are an indie rock band from Fullerton, California. They have released their debut album Robbers and Cowards to rave reviews from many of music's top critics, and are currently touring the U.S. with Tokyo Police Club and Delta Spirit. The Kids mix blues, rock, and soul to produce a distinctly different sound from any other band today. They are religious, and that fact is sometimes reflected in their lyrics. Some people have criticized them for this move, and some even mocked this (Pitchfork). They are not a Christian band though, they have even said so. So forget what you have heard about this band a give em' a listen. You might be surprised!

Fun Fact: They have many celebrity fans including Mischa Barton (The OC) and Zach Braff (Scrubs)

Modest Mouse-We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank

Modest Mouse's latest LP doesn't have a another Float On, and LCD Soundsystem will probably sell more in its first week (more on that later), but it is still a solid step forward in their new quest of becoming a pop band. The addition of Johnny Marr isn't that noticeable, but does provide another dimension to the band's sound. The album is receiving generally good reviews.

LCD Soundsystem-Sound of Silver

LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy is back with his sophmore album, Sound of Silver. Literally. When he went away to record the album he wrapped the whole studio in tin foil. We're guessing he's really into this, huh? After the album leaked he decided to tell all of his fans to buy the album the first week it came out in order to crack the Billboard Top 200. Then the Dreamgirls soundtrack became lowest selling No. 1 CD ever, he set his hopes even higher. A No. 1 record. The album is receiving great reviews, and Pitchfork has already given it a 9.2
